Christmas activities to do with kids in Norwich

Festive Norwich! (Image source: Wikimedia Commons)

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and there’s no better way to welcome the Christmas season than a day out with the family. From carolling to feasting, here is a brief list of some great activities around Norwich that are appropriate for all ages.

Father Christmas comes to the Maddermarket Theatre
Norwich’s Maddermarket Theatre is hosting a rather famous visitor until 23 December (I think you can guess who…). You and your little ones can visit this Narnia-themed magical grotto, get the opportunity to show your wish list to Father Christmas, and receive a special gift! The Theatre is also putting on a festive production of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ (which runs until 2nd January), or take the kids to a special performance of The Singing Squad on the 19th.
For more information and to buy tickets online, visit the Maddermarket site.

Deck the halls at the Great Hospital
Join the Norwich Occasional Choir in the grand Birkbeck Hall on Monday the 21st for an evening of carols, mince pies and hot drinks (adults, take note: there will be mulled wine…). Although this is a free event, guests are encouraged to make a small donation to the Great Hospital charities.
Booking is required – click here for reservation details.

Have a tasty Christmas meal

Experience Victorian Christmas
This Saturday and Sunday, pay a visit to Norwich’s Victorian Christmas Market. Set in The Open, this market features 100 or so independent traders offering a festive selection of handmade gifts, appetising delicacies and fresh produce. Completely free to enter, this market is actually more of a Christmas experience: there’s going to be live reindeer, a selection of carols performed by a line-up of talented choirs, and the big man himself – Santa’s Grotto is the perfect place to take the kids after a full day of singing, shopping, and eating.

(Missed the market? Never fear: the historic Norwich Market nestled in the heart of the city is open Monday to Saturday, all year round.)

Four easy and simple New Year Resolutions you should be making to improve your dental hygiene

Each year we all make the up most effort to set some New Year resolutions, and we all know that the majority of them go straight out the window, within say the first 2-4 weeks. So this year, why not set some completely different ones that are not only achievable, but are for the good of our pearly whites? Because at the end of the day would you rather give up and run the risk of having unhealthy teeth or give something different a shot and boast the healthiest smile you’ve had in years!

1.       Make a habit of seeing the dentist!
(An obvious one we know, but crucial nonetheless)
So few people actually like going to the dentist and generally speaking this is down to the fear factor. We recommend the more of a habit you make of attending check-ups, the less and less reluctant you will become, so by summer ’16 you’ll be skipping back and to, to the dentist.

2.       End your relationship with sugar
This is a really optimistic one, because let’s be honest, completely cutting out sugar may not exactly be realistic. But it’s definitely worth reducing the time you spend with this particular ingredient. No doubt you’ll be all chocolate’d out when the festive period is over, so take the opportunity to kick start the New Year! Try swapping sweets for replacements like a trail mix or the occasional square of dark chocolate to keep balanced (and sane!)

3.       Floss like there’s no tomorrow!
Flossing is so great because it’s one of the most helpful and effective additions to routine to keep your teeth clean, white and healthy. There’s no excuse really, you can buy it pretty much anywhere and it’s super effective in removing the tiny bits of food that a brush can’t get at and that most of the time aren’t even visible. Use this to ensure the most thorough and satisfying clean!

4.       Put an electric toothbrush on your Christmas list, pronto!
With a few more days until the white bearded man slips down your chimney, there is just about enough time to add an electric toothbrush to your list. Then you just have to hope you were on his nice list this year! There have been significant links made between the use of an electric toothbrush and the extensive removal of plaque. Maybe you’ve never used an electric one before, so add this to both your Christmas list and New Year resolutions list and you’ll be sure to see a difference.

So with all the above said, go ahead and enjoy the festive period and the end of the year! Just remember to welcome in the New Year with these really simple and achievable resolutions that will help you see a difference in your dental hygiene in no time!

Be Safe This Christmas with Pryers’ Elf and Safety Infographic

Christmas is almost upon us. Leo breaks up from school today and he is beyond excited. This year has been truly special because it is all about the magic. This year he absolutely understands, and I know that he is going to be full of beans this Christmas Eve, and you know what?

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Having Leo at such a wonderful age really does help you re-live the Christmas's from when you were younger, when the magic was rife and you couldn't help but lie awake into the early hours of Christmas morning, because you had butterflies fluttering around your tummy in anticipation of waking up and running downstairs as soon as the sun rose.

That will no doubt be Leo in a little under a weeks time.

Pryers Solicitors are sharing  our excitement for the arrival of Santa Claus and they have shared a rather humorous snippet of Santa's Elf & Safety precautions and safety measures! It did make me giggle, because lets face it even Santa has to adhere to additional measures in modern day life, you can see below what could help to make his job a little bit safer for him!

You can view the full infographic on Pryers Solicitors website, I hope it made you smile as much as it did me. I don't know what the man in red will make to the hard hat.

5 facts that will make you want to quit smoking

Smoking is an unhealthy habit and quitting can protect your wellbeing and vastly improve your quality of life. If you’re looking to give up, help is at hand.

There are treatments available that can make it easier to stop smoking. For example, using an effective medicine such as Champix (varenicline) could increase your chances of giving up. This works by reducing your cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and it blocks the effect of nicotine. You may want to speak to your GP or visit an online pharmacy for further information. Meanwhile, if you’re struggling to find the motivation to conquer your addiction, take a look at these five facts that should help you banish the cigarettes for good.

1. It kills 100,000 people in the UK each year

Although you’ve probably heard it time and time again, smoking is extremely bad for your health. This habit can have an adverse affect on your heart, brain, lungs, stomach, throat, circulation and bones, as well as causing health conditions including lung cancer, strokes, heart disease, diabetes and blindness, and it can even result in death. In fact, smoking kills around 100,000 people in the UK every year, so kicking your addiction could potentially save your life.

2. It affects your fertility

Whether you’re hoping to have a baby soon or in the future, smoking could be scuppering your chances. This habit can reduce fertility in women, making it more difficult to conceive. It can also cause male impotence and it can damage sperm, lower sperm count and cause testicular cancer. If you or your partner is a smoker, quitting could increase your chances of expanding your family.

3. It harms those around you

Smoking isn’t just bad for your health; it can also harm those around you. When you light up a cigarette, most of the smoke goes into the air, meaning that your family and friends are breathing in secondhand smoke. Those who take in this smoke on a regular basis are at risk of developing the same diseases as a smoker. So, quitting is not only beneficial for your own health, but it will also protect those you love.

4. It diminishes your appearance

Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your skin, meaning that you’re likely to be left with a dull, grey and lacklustre complexion. The habit can prematurely age your skin by up to 20 years, and it means you’re more likely to develop wrinkles. The toxins in cigarettes can also cause cellulite. Deciding to give up will prevent any further damage to your skin and keep you looking youthful and fresh-faced.

5. It costs you big

Smoking is expensive and you may not be aware of exactly how much it’s costing you. On average, those who stop smoking find themselves saving approximately £250 a month - that’s £3,000 a year. Choosing to quit could save you hundreds, maybe even thousands, of pounds each year, allowing you to spend the cash on something more worthwhile, such as a holiday or a whole new wardrobe.
4Taking these five facts into consideration could be what you need to help you kick your smoking habit. For guidance on how to give up, you may want to seek help from a medical professional.

4 Ways To Get A Better Night’s Sleep

4 Ways To Get A Better Night’s Sleep

Sleep plays such a vital role in your day-to-day life. Not getting enough can negatively impact your health both physically and mentally, so it makes sense to take steps to improve your night-time routine and improve the quality of your ‘Z’s.

The following tips will guide you to a better night’s sleep; you’ll wake up feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready for your day (even before you hit the coffee shop!).

1. Replace Old Bedding

It’s important to buy new bedding once in a while, not only for the health benefits, but for the satisfying feeling of lying in a bed with fresh, new sheets. It’s important to have bedding that supports your body and keeps your body at the right temperature for an ideal night’s sleep. Wool is a good choice when it comes to bedding, as it’s comfortable, warm and light. Retailers such as MiniJumbuk offer a range of products made from wool, including blankets, mattress toppers and pillows. It’s also important to have a pillow that provides gentle support; you don’t want to wake up every morning with a sore back and neck.

2. Create A Dark, Cool And Noise-Free Environment

Ideally, a bedroom should be cool, dark and noise-free. To keep your room cool, and to cut out background noise, simply use a fan. To keep your room free of light, invest in blackout blinds. Any light filtering into your room should be taken very seriously, as light affects your body’s level of melatonin. In a dark space, melatonin is secreted by your brain. This makes you feel tired, thus easing you into a good night’s sleep.

3. Avoid Caffeine

Are you someone who relies on coffee to kick-start your day? You’re certainly not alone. Unfortunately, drinking coffee every day is not a great habit.

If you really enjoy your coffee and you simply can’t live without it, drink it in the morning. It’s best to drink coffee outside or by a sunny window, as the exposure to light will make you feel more alert. Keep in mind that caffeine can have a lasting effect on your body for up to 12 hours, so avoid drinking coffee after lunch. Be kind to your body; give it time to wind down at the end of the day.

4. Calm Your Mind

Minimising feelings of stress will allow you to fall asleep faster and for longer. Calming the mind and managing thoughts can be achieved through deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and visualisation. It’s best not to engage with screens in the two hours before you go to bed. Instead, meditate or do gentle stretching. This will calm the mind, minimise stress and better the quality of your sleep.

Improve your day-to-day performance by making sleep a top priority. Yes, coffee tastes great, but it’s not as satisfying as a good night’s sleep. Making small changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference to your life in the long run. Aim for a good night’s sleep tonight, and you’ll wake up tomorrow feeling refreshed, happy and healthy. Then it’s just a matter of repeating until you have a steady routine in place.

Teaching Your Child How to Dress Themselves

Teaching Your Child How to Dress Themselves

Getting dressed is one of those things in life that is an essential skill to learn, but one which a lot of children struggle to get the hang of (at least one element) and which a lot of children don't seem to think is a priority. This will remain the case as long as Mummy or Daddy are there to 'help' or do it for them, so here we look at how you can encourage your toddler to do it for themselves, or at least have a go.

There are two parts to getting toddlers to dress themselves. Firstly, there is the actual act of getting dressed and learning the different skills required. Secondly, there is the issue of what to wear and the tantrums and arguments that can occur if the clothes you want them to put on are not actually the ones they want to wear.

The Goal

The goal for your toddler and what you are hoping to achieve is that by the time they go to school they should be able to at least do some of it by themselves. This is a skill that they should have before they go to school so that they can get changed for PE and changed back into school uniform.

The Tricky Bits

The most difficult parts of getting dressed for a toddler are buttons, zips and shoelaces. There are many aids on the market such as dolls and boards with false shoelaces that can help children to master these skills, but the best way for them to do it is by practising for themselves with a little bit of help from you. It is best to begin with items that don't have any of these things so that your little one can practise and just get used to putting on and taking off clothes. Once you feel confident about that, then you should introduce fastenings.

While you are still trying to master the art of making sure that your toddler has dressed themselves properly, your toddler will be busy trying to decide what outfit they want to wear. For most toddlers, particularly those from age two upwards, they will have a good idea of what they want to wear, even if you don't think it is particularly co-ordinated. The best advice is to go with the flow. Alternatively, they might want to wear the same thing every day. You can have all the kids designer wear in the world, but if they want to wear the same top every day, then there is not a lot you can do except impose some sort of restrictions and deal with the tantrum that is bound to follow.

Good Luck!

Top Tips for a Budget-Friendly Family Holiday

Top Tips for a Budget-Friendly Family Holiday

Going on a family holiday can be stressful, and one of the most stressful things about it is worry about the cost.  In this article, you will find a short list of simple ideas that can help you save money when traveling with your family.

  1. Visit scenic locations rather than tourist traps
Some destinations are a lot better than others, but that's never truer than when you're travelling with family, and especially with young children. While you may be getting nagged to visit the obvious places that families tend to go, the thing to keep in mind is that many of them are designed to get you spending as much as possible, and they're not above exploiting the easily targeted minds of kids to encourage you to spend even more.

Consider destinations that are just naturally beautiful, like the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Yosemite, etc.  These are peaceful, beautiful, and enjoyable destinations that offer a fantastic experience without the high price tag. Just imagine, with the money you save by not visiting a theme park, you could find a Fallsview hotel at Niagara Falls and enjoy a much better stay, or you could enjoy better dining experiences than that bland, over-priced, and usually unhealthy theme park food.

  1. Choose to fly at less popular times
Flights that arrive or depart late at night or early in the morning may be less expensive than other flights on the same route. While arriving with your family in a strange destination late at night may cause you to worry, it shouldn't, because you’ll have already researched and organised exactly how you will get from the airport to your hotel well in advance. You can also find that some days of the week may offer lower costs than others. So, if you have some flexibility about what days you can travel, try to travel on the less expensive days.

  1. Don't forget about the time of year either
Seasonal changes can have a huge impact on travel costs, as this report from The Telegraph shows that even if parents had to pay nearly £1,000 in fines and court costs for taking their children on holidays during term time, they'd still sometimes pay less than if they went during normal school holiday times!

  1. When booking your accommodation, consider a family suite
Yes, big rooms are expensive and maybe sometimes even more expensive than booking two smaller rooms, but they can save you money and trouble. If your kids have a whole hotel room to themselves, you won't really know what they're getting up to, and that is not just a safety risk, but can also prove to be very costly.

  1. Consider mailing souvenirs and gifts home rather than carrying them
If you're flying, the cost of carrying all those knick-knacks you picked up while on holiday could be quite a lot.  It's also a massive pain to struggle around with extra bags and cases (and of course you may have to purchase an extra bag or case to carry it all in). You could avoid all that by mailing things home.

If you send by surface mail, which takes much longer to arrive, you could save even more. Just make sure you don't send very expensive items by surface mail as they may go missing or you might have to pay exorbitant duties to collect them.

Firing up my run with Phoebe Thomas

Kayla Itsines Transformation

It's been 18 months since my fitness mission began, sometimes I like to sit and look back on old photos from before I decided to make this change, and it is only then that the true magnitude of what I have achieved in that time frame sinks in. Fitness and exercise has become such a massive part of my life, and in ways that I could never have envisioned.

Did I think that when I started out that I would now enjoy what I am doing? Did I think for a second that it would become second nature? Did I think that I would be where I am today? My honest answer is no, no I didn't foresee any of this.

At the end of November I was invited along to the Transition Zone gym in Parsons Green, London to take part in a 20 minute run with the very motivational Phoebe Thomas. Phoebe is a British Actress, Journalist and Advanced Personal Trainer and Running Coach.

Phoebe Thomas

Phoebe shared her top tips for training and running in winter, the top one being having the right kit. I couldn't agree more with this because if you are dressed correctly from head to foot, you are equipped to deal with everything no matter the weather. I think it is important to dress in light clothing that you can remove if you need to, as Phoebe said, there is nothing worse than going out in jumpers and coats, as when you warm up you will end up carrying all your sweaty clothing around. It will ultimately slow you down.

My training kit for the Winter season:

ILU Fitness

- Nike Air Max 2015 Running Shoes

- Ilu Signiture Compression Leggings - They are lovely and thick and absolutely perfect for training in the outdoors at this time of year. They are supportive and look fantastic.

- Ilu Modern Mesh Top - I wear this with a sports bra underneath. It's an additional light layer that helps keep me warm while embracing the elements.

- Asics Fujitrail Pack Running Jacket - Absolutely perfect for running in unpredictable weather conditions such as the British Winter. The Raglan sleeves promote an increased freedom of movement while the jackets balaclava snap-up hood offers secure coverage if the skies suddenly open, or you want to keep the chill off your head. An adjustable drawcord at the bottom hem allows for a more secure, close to comfort fit.

We were lucky enough to preview some of the gorgeous new lines from LIJA on the night. LIJA is known for designing collections where technical performance apparel meets modern, innovative style, so make sure to have a look at the Fall 2015 Look Book.

Winter running

The reflective 360 degree elements throughout offer increased visibility in low-light conditions, which helps me to be seen when out running at night.

I haven't done much running in the 18 month time frame, I have focused more on cross training and strength, but running is something that I would love to see myself completing more of in 2016. I do feel that I have dramatically improved my over all fitness over the course of 2015, and it would be great to start making the most of this. Phoebe was fantastic and over the course of the evening she took out two running groups of many different fitness levels into the cold November evening.

I have to admit that I was a little worried about falling behind everyone, but I surprised myself. We completed a series of different running activities over different time frames to demonstrate different running paces. I thought that I might need picking up off the floor at the end of the session but I was pleased to see that my stamina was better than I had given myself credit for.

Nathan fire up your run

We had been kitted out with some really fantastic running gear before we headed out, they included SOLE Footbeds that I am really looking forward to trying out. I have been suffering with a sprained ankle over recent weeks and haven't made it out for a run just yet. There were a number of goodies (some that we even used on the run) from Nathan. The Bandolier Vest and strobe light really helped light us up against the dark London back drop.

Upon arriving back at the Transition Zone, I got to experience my very first Power Plate session. I have heard about Power Plates over the years, and i'll be honest. My preconceived opinion on them wasn't glowing, I thought they were gimmicky and it had never interested me in working them into my fitness regime. Until now that is.

Power Plates

Power Plate is so much more than a vibrating platform, it adds a new and challenging dimension to your workout. It does this by stimulating your muscles to contract multiple times per second, Power Plate delivers a total fitness solution in half the time frame of your usual work out. The sessions that take place at Transition Zone aim to work you to the max, and they combine a variety of training methods that include boxing, skipping, free weights and kettlebells.

ILU Fitness

What can you expect to see from adding Power Plate to your work out?

Expect to see significant improvements in your over all strength, flexibility, muscle tone and inch loss. You’ll notice an increase in your aerobic capacity and fitness levels, decrease blood pressure and burn plenty of calories.

Transition Zone Gym

What did I think?

Actually hearing about the Power Plate technology and how it can aid your workout I was really intrigued to give it a go for myself. We tried a number of different movements on the available Power Plates and by the end of play I was a convert. I would love to give them a thorough try, and I have been invited back to Transition Zone to enjoy a full session, something that I will definitely be trying to do in the New Year.

Transition Zone Gym

The Recovery Cafe

Following a fantastic evening of activity and a great bunch of people, we took the time to un-wind at the Recovery Cafe on site at the Transition Zone. The Recover Cafe is just fantastic and I loved the idea of being able to work out, and then relax on site with a healthy protein snack, bottle of water or a shake. My own gym doesn't seem to embrace this concept and instead of healthy treats, we can purchase Mars Bars.. It's not ideal.

The diverse and exciting range on offer at the Recovery Cafe ranges from Hot Cacao Hits, Chia Pots, Energy Balls, Protein Power Balls and nutritious juices.

My idea of heaven!

Foam Rolling

A big thank you to the team over at Action PR, Transition Zone, Phoebe Thomas and everyone who made the night.so fantastic and informative. I had a great time and feel inspired to get out and running.

Disclaimer: I was invited along to the event and provided with a generous goodie bag. All thoughts and opinions expressed are completely honest and my own.

For Him - Christmas Guide 2015

men Christmas Gift Guide

Men, men, men.

What do you buy the man who has everything this Christmas? I struggle each year, and I am sure that I am not alone trying to accomplish the perfect gift, so let's take a look at the items that have made my gifts for 'him' in 2015.

Stockings and treats

men Christmas Gift Guide

Now you might be under the impression that chocolate and bubbles are the way to a woman's heart, and not your mans, but the reality is quite different. Chocolate and bubbles mean quality time, you and him. Maybe a film on the box, indulgence and grown up time. It seems like such a simple choice but one that you really shouldn't over look... How about a Toblerone, the ultimate man's bar, a bottle of Mionetto Prosecco or for something a little different and delicious, how about The Adnams Selection Prosecco Spumante and a festive screening of Die Hard!?

Of course if your going to sit down to watch a film over the Christmas break, then you might want to arm yourselves with more than one bar of chocolate. We all know that the men in our lives will most likely inhale the snacks within a few seconds flat, so be prepared and really surprise him. Bonne Maman have a delicious selection of cakes and treats that will really spoil him over the festive season.

Be Practical...

Sometimes the man who has everything, literally has... well everything. Maybe they need some things for the office? Bits and pieces that they actually require, over things that will just get pushed to one corner and forgotten about. You could always ask them if they need something in particular or just hunt out some attractive options for them:

Leitz Christmas
Leitz have a lovely selection of office necessities that would make lovely gifts for the man in your life. Be it for work or play, there is something for everyone. I particularly like the Complete Laptop Smart Traveler Bag. The quality bag is lightweight and won't look out of place in a business setting. It boats smart zip fastening, matt metal buckles and genuine padded leather handles.

Now you have thought about the three main aspects, keeping them fed, watered and looking good, you may be wondering what else you could do for them? It' no secret that men are ultimately big kids, and they demonstrate this by playing video games (or at least many of them). I know you might be thinking 'Well I don't want to encourage that!'... but have you thought outside the box? What if you got them their very own gaming chair? Think about them being in their man cave... You could actually get on with something for you, really ladies this is a Christmas gift for you!

2015 has been the year of the selfie stick, and I am sure we can all say that at one point or another, we have given one a go. I myself first discovered the selfie stick towards the back end of last year on a trip to London. In this time frame the selfie stick has come on in leaps and bounds, and now Rollei have suprised us the the ePano Selfie - a motorized panoramic head for smartphones.
the Rollei ePano Selfie is lightweight and robust, perfect for those who like myself might be a little bit clumsy at times. It has been designed for Samsung and IOS users in mind and links up to the Bluetooth operating systems while holding the phone in place with an adjustable clamp. It comes equipped with a remote control that enables you to modify the set up remotely. If you want to adjust where the camera is pointing, just touch a button and redirect it. The unit can achieve a complete 360 degree rotation, so the world really is just at the touch of a button.
Priced at just £37.50 on Amazon, the ePano Selfie would make a superb tech gift to a budding photographer this Christmas.

Features:
- Up to 3 hours play time
- Bluetooth function to connect to enabled devices (phone, tablet, etc.)
- Usb and aux inputs for mp3 players etc.
- Adjustable EQ to adjust the sound just as you like it
- Extendable handle and wheels – easily wheeled round so no heavy lifting

Just think of the fun that the entire family could have with this after a few to many glasses of champagne on Christmas day! I took ours along to a recent fitness meet, and it provided the music to everyone taking part. It did me proud and the Bluetooth function was superb, the volume of the speakers was great and we were able to have Kayla Itsines Spotify list blasting out during the work out. This would make a great gift for the avid karaoke singer or someone like me who likes to use it for working out and playing music remotely through a Bluetooth speaker.
The Intempo Tailgate Speaker retails at £149.99.
