The moon runs through eight named phases in about 29.5 days, from one new moon to the next. That span is called a synodic month, the time the moon takes to return to the same position relative to the sun as seen from Earth. The cycle does not land on a round number of days, so the phases never fall on the same dates twice.


The eight phases follow a fixed order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent. Waxing means the lit part of the disc is growing, and waning means it is shrinking. Four of those eight are worth putting on a calendar, because they divide the cycle into near-equal blocks: the new moon at day 0, then the first quarter, full moon and last quarter at roughly 7.4, 14.8 and 22.1 days after it.


Phase dates are calculated years ahead, so you can take them from a printed almanac, a diary that marks them, or an app that keeps a moon calendar. How Do You Match Family Tasks To The Shape Of The Month?

Split the month at those four dates and give each block a different kind of task. The last block, from the last quarter back round to the new moon, is where the clearing goes. Returns, laundry backlogs, cancelling the subscription nobody uses and tidying the drawer everything ends up in are all tasks with no natural deadline, so giving them a set window is what gets them done. The final few nights before the new moon are also the darkest in the cycle, and they are the best ones for showing children the stars.

How Do You Track The Phase Without Checking An App?

Look at which side of the moon is bright and how late it rises. Both tell you where you are in the cycle without opening anything, and both are easy to check on the walk back from the school gate. The moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, so its position at any given hour shifts noticeably across a week.


From the northern hemisphere, a waxing moon is lit on its right-hand side and a waning moon on its left. That single check separates the first half of the cycle from the second, and the four blocks rest on exactly that distinction. It reverses in the southern hemisphere, where the lit edge appears on the opposite side.


The rising times settle the rest of it. A new moon rises and sets with the sun and cannot be seen at all, which is why the sky is darkest around it. A first quarter moon sits high in the south at sunset and goes down near midnight. A full moon climbs as the sun sets and stays up until sunrise, so it is the only phase visible for a whole night. A last quarter moon rises around midnight and is still in the morning sky, and it is often the one children notice on the way to school.

Start by writing one date on the calendar: the next new moon. One thing to expect is that the phases do not line up with the calendar month. The cycle runs 29.5 days against months of 30 or 31, so each phase arrives a day or two earlier and drifts backwards through the year. Planning by the phases instead of by the first of the month keeps every block the same length in every cycle, which is the part that makes them worth using.
