The Dyson Digital Slim DC59 Review

Back in December I was invited along to visit Dyson so they could un-veil their latest cordless vacuum. The Digital Slim DC59.

I was really looking forward to seeing what changes had been made, as I had been using the DC44 for a year and absolutely loved it. So I was certain that I would be as equally impressed if not more by the changes that they have implemented in this time frame.

Before I used the Digital Slim for the first time well over a year ago, I have to admit I didn't think I would be a fan. We have a full size Dyson so surely I wouldn't need anything else? Before long though I was reaching for my cordless vacuum over the big one each and every time. I found it so convenient, especially with having a toddler around the house who literally just seemed to magnetically attract crumbs in his wake.

While we were visiting Dyson’s Marketing Head Quarters we put the DC59 to the test against a number of competitors. I found this really interesting because some of the models prices were very similar to the Dyson, yet the performance was absolutely abysmal. We were vacuuming up flour and other objects that we had placed on some tiled flooring. Some of these competitor models couldn’t even get it all up off the floor, and I found this rather shocking. The DC59 rocked it, and even managed to get the flour that had fallen down a crevice.

Seeing the DC59 up close and personal I could see instantly where some of the changes had been applied. The first thing I noticed was how it looked, in comparison to my DC44 it looked more modern and visually better. In terms of power, they have cranked it up a notch so that it now sucks up just as much dust as a corded vacuum, thanks to its 2 Tier Radial Cyclones.

What’s in the DC59 box?

Battery
Crevice Tool
Combination Accessory Tool
Removable Wand
Mini Motorised Tool
Docking Station
Battery Charger
Quick Start Guide
2 Year Guarantee

I have been using the DC59 since December 2013 and have been really impressed with it. I can definitely feel the extra suction while I am vacuuming, and it sucks up so much more efficiently. I use it all around the house and very, very rarely get the full sized vacuum cleaner out these days. I leave it on charge via the handy docking station that you can attach to a wall, so that it is always ready to go.

In terms of the actual use and handling between the DC44 and the DC59 there isn’t much difference. You still have the same button that you have to push in to turn it on, and then release to turn it off. For me personally the biggest improvement is that it has better suction.

The DC59 is completely cordless and runs on battery power (Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery). The battery life on these may not sound very long but I think you would be surprised when it actually comes to using it around your house. We live in a reasonably sized house, it’s not big but there is not a room in the house that I don’t use this vacuum cleaner. The run time for the DC59 is 26 minutes (This has been improved from the 20 minutes run time on the DC44), but thanks to the run time enhancing trigger you can get the very most out of your Dyson. Un-like many other hand held cleaners that stay turned on from start to finish, you can get more out of your handheld because it doesn’t have to stay on. So in between cleaning tasks you can turn it off, for instance when you wander from the living room to the dining room. This means that the battery time is only used for vacuuming and you aren’t loosing precious time.

Of course there is a boost mode, that gives you more suction but decreases your running time. I find that it is handy to have the boost, because there are occasions that warrant it. The dust collection compartment may seem small, but I have never struggled with emptying it frequently.

I recommended the Dyson DC69 to my partner’s family after I was so pleased with it, and they went out and bought one. I was really surprised to find out that they weren’t as impressed with it as I had been. They didn’t think that the suction was that great in comparison to their full sized vacuum. The only instance I have found the suction a little lacking is when the head is off, but with the attachments are on, it definitely lives up to my expectations.

The filter should be washed and air dried each month, admittedly I am guilty of forgetting to do this, but it is so easy to do. Instructions on how to do this are included within the manual.

As this is a hand held vacuum you can use it for absolutely everything, and that is exactly what we do. From cleaning the entirety of the house, from the cobwebs on the walls, to the stairs and of course the rooms. We even use it when we clean the cars. The number of different attachment’s that are included make it a great all-rounder.

Over all I have really benefited from the improvements, and really like the DC59. I just love the convenience of being able to un-plug from the dock and get on with the cleaning. There is no hauling the big vacuum out, plugging it in and slowly going from room to room. It is just easy.

The Dyson Hot Review

I am a big fan of Dyson, in fact I love them.

We swear by our Two Dyson Vacuum Cleaners and with the extensive range ever growing, and the technology always improving it is great to see how the products develop.

Not only do Dyson have the fabulous vacuum technology such as the Animal and the Digital Slim. They also have the Air Multiplier Fan and the Dyson Hot Heater.

Over the last couple of months I have had the pleasure of using the Dyson Hot, a heater like no other that I have ever come across. It stands in length just up to my knee and is smaller and more compact than I first expected. The Dyson Hot is finished off in a bright metallic Blue/Purple and iron Grey looking incredibly modern and stylish.

Looking at it you may wonder where all of the visible heating elements are, or where the blades are hiding?

Quite simply there are no blades, and the heating elements are cleverly hidden away!

Instead the Dyson Hot uses Air Multiplier technology in order to amplify the air in the room to generate long range heat protection, this in turn allows the heater to evenly heat the entirety of the room up to an even temperature.

Dyson, how does it work?

Air is accelerated through an aperture. This creates a jet of hot air that passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp, channelling its direction. Surrounding air is drawn into the airflow, amplifying it 6 times through processes known as inducement and entrainment.

Over the past couple of months what with the arctic temperatures that brought many a icy blizzards along in it's wake, it is safe to say that this clever heater has been given a real work through. Our dining room can be a pretty cold place even with the heating on, and being Leo's play room we need to keep it nice and warm so that he can play in there. I have taken to putting the fan on the table out of the way of Leo's play time and warming the room up to a much more desirable temperature.

I have been so put off about going into the dining room to watch Leo play or have our dinner when the temperature gets so chilly in there, but with the Dyson Hot it is so much more comfortable and I don't object about going in to watch Leo run around with his many toys any more.

So what is in the box?

Operations manual
Loop amplifier
Remote control
Base

Everything you need to get started is in the box, even the 2 year guarantee which you can register for using the form, going online or even giving Dyson a call.

Assembling the Dyson is a doddle, and literally involves placing the base on the bottom of the fan. With the base in place you are ready to plug in, set your desired temperature either using the digital display on the bottom of the fan, or by using your compact remote control. The remote is a great touch and means that you can quickly and easily change the temperature to match your comfort at the flick of a button without moving an inch.

When you aren't using the handy little remote there is a great storage option. The top of the heater is magnetic so you can actually just place it on top and it won't be going anywhere!

There are 10 different speed settings in all, and you can set the temperature from as little as 1°C right up to the dizzy heights of 37°C with complete precision and control.

When the fan is on you can certainly hear it but I would not say it was loud, no louder than any other fan or heater anyway. I currently have the fan on 10, the highest speed setting and I would not say it was a distraction or loud at all. I could very easily sleep with the heater on without it causing any issue, but I am highlighting this as I have read some reviews who have specified the heater as loud.

Please see the video at the bottom of this review to hear just how loud the heater is going through the settings.

Having Leo I know just how important safety is, and obviously a heater is not something that I will be leaving around for Leo to stumble upon but Dyson have built in a great safety feature. Just in case. If the heater is knocked over the heater turns off. Simple, effective and above all else, safe.

The heater does exactly what it says on the tin and efficiently heats the room very quickly. I would highly recommend this heater for people who are lucky enough to have a conservatory that they would still like to make use of during the winter months. This really would be perfect and would demonstrate the air multiplier technology to it's full capability.

At £299.99 it is at the pricier end of the market, but for the stylish looks and Air Multiplier technology it is hands down a winning product.

Overall I am really impressed with the Dyson Hot Heater, I do think it works better as a heater than it does as a fan but it is of course primarily advertised as a heater with cooling capability. It really is a great bit of kit and Dyson deserve a big thumbs up!

Well done Dyson!

The Dyson Digital Slim Cordless Vacuum Review

In our household we have our Animal Dyson upright cleaner, which is great for a full spring clean of the house, but having a toddler means that I sometimes need to get the vacuum out on multiple occasions throughout the day, and sometimes the thought of getting the vacuum out one more time in any one given day can be a bit daunting.

You see Leo likes to snack, biscuits, bread, you name it! They all leave crumbs in their wake, and if you follow the crumb trail you are sure to find Leo with his bowl of the remaining snack. This can happen a number of times throughout the day, usually after I have already vacuumed the original crime scene from his first snack of the day…

Dyson sent us their Digital Slim Cordless Vacuum, the DC44 Animal to put to the test in our toddler house of mayhem. At first I wondered what I would do with two vacuum cleaners, because surely one would be sufficient? Surely I would be able to just whip out our DC41 Animal for all problems? Well yes, I could do that but the DC44 gives me the chance to clean up the mess quickly and efficiently, and it is no pain there after to get it out again and again whenever I need to throughout the day.

The DC44 is completely cordless and runs on battery power. To charge it you plug into the wall plug with the included docking station and the next time you need it, it is fully charged and ready to go again. What I love about this compact vacuum is that it is still so powerful and gets through Leo’s messy antics without even breaking a sweat.

We are planning on mounting the docking station on the wall in the near future, just so that we can put it on charge when we have finished with it, we have been using it a number of weeks sporadically and have only just had to charge it again. Although it only gives you 20 minutes of use from the word go, you don’t tend to use it for 20 minutes at any one given time, so you actually get more out of it than you would think before you need to charge it.

Dyson have designed it so that you get 20 minutes of standard run time or 8 minutes on boost mode which provides you with a more powerful suction. Even when the battery is running low you never experience a drop in the suction, it stays consistent and as powerful as it was at full power.

There are a number of aspects that set this Dyson apart from other cordless vacuum cleaners and one of those aspects is the intelligent digital motor that is smaller, lighter and faster than the conventional electric motors featured on other cordless vacuums. The DC44 motor spins up to three times faster which makes the Animal the most powerful cordless vacuum cleaner.

As with all Dyson’s the Cordless Animal does not have a vacuum bag, which makes life so much easier without the added hassle of having to change them. With both of my Dyson’s all I have to do is empty the contents from the vacuum into the bin before carrying on with my mission to a cleaner home.

I am really impressed that the DC44 features the famous Dyson ball technology making it easy to follow Leo’s trail of crumbs to the main source of mess. I can weave the bounding steps of my 17 month old from left to right with no problem at all.

The motorised head has two types of bristles that has been engineered for cleaning different types of floor surfaces. There are ultra-fine anti-static carbon filaments that remove fine dust from hard floors and stiff nylon bristles that remove ground in dirt from carpets.

We have taken to using the DC44 on our laminate kitchen flooring, and it gets up absolutely everything in its path leaving us with a mess free floor. We use it on our living room and dining room carpet when Leo decides to crush his snack into the floor after he’s finished eating it, or even when he is sat on the sofa with the snack I didn’t even know he had stolen…Only to find that he has fed more to the sofa than he has to his mouth.

The DC44 animal comes with 5 attachment heads that you can change over for a deeper clean; the mini motorised tool provides increased power for tough tasks such as removing pet hair. It is great in confined spaces and I find that it gets into the corners of the kitchen perfectly, getting all those little bits and pieces that may otherwise be missed.

My Dyson Animal duo are fantastic, they get my house back from the very brink of crud and restore the balance between cleanliness and grime. I couldn’t get my head around having two vacuum cleaners in the beginning, but now I see they both provide me with a valuable service and having the cordless Dyson really does give me the freedom to follow Leo to the smallest corner of our living room to get to wherever the dirt may be hiding.

It is absolutely fantastic for vacuuming up and down the stairs, taking away any issue of carting the bigger vacuum up and down. This cordless Dyson is fantastic and gives you identical service to your big upright vacuum without the hassle of plugging it in.

Dyson always provide product guarantees for their products, the DC44 is no exception to this rule and comes with a 2 year guarantee, just in case you do encounter any un-expected problems.

The Dyson DC44 Animal retails at £279.99 at the pricier end of the vacuum market, but if you take into consideration that this vacuum does everything is says on the tin, the 2 year guarantee and just how convenient it reallty is, you can soon justify it to yourself.

In a home the size of mine I think I would be very happy simply using this as my main vacuum cleaner, and I am sure I could get around the entire house before the Dyson ran out of battery.

That will be my next challenge.
